Description

Turkey Pressures Syria to Introduce Reforms Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan still considers Syrian President Bashar al-Assad his personal friend and believes he should stay in power, but he wants to see him implement political and economic reforms to quell a popular uprising as part of the so-called Arab Spring, according to a leading commentator in the Beirut-based influential daily AN NAHAR in three pieces on July 8, 9 and 11. "Erdogan and Assad are friends," Sarkis Naoum wrote, quoting unnamed sources close to the Turkish premier. "Also, Turkey and Syria made very important achievements, including an abolishment of visa requirements and the inauguration of major joint economic projects," Naoum added.
